Antecedents (top)
The NUMA’s embryo was the CAD/CAM Laboratory created in 1988, where the
CIM Tupiniquim project was established. In 1989 the first CIM Project of the
country was established with the support of the RHAE/CNPq Program from the MCT
(Ministry of Science and Technology). Following that was approved a FINEP project
for the construction of an Integrated Model Factory (FIM), in which already
existed a proposal for the creation of NUMA. On that proposal NUMA would be
the link between the University and enterprises. In 1991 started the Accord
USP/IBM aiming for the supply of equipments of hardware and software. In 1992
a thematic project was approved on FAPESP to continue the construction of the
FIM.
In 1993 it was approved a project with the BID/USP to the construction of a
building to shelter the FIM. In 1995 and 1996 this building was reformed with
the support of FAPESP to shelter the labs of Simulation; Systematization and
Integration of Manufacturing; CAD/CAE; Automated Flexible Fabrication and Automation
of Fabrication Processes. In 1994 a FINEP project was approved to the construction
of an intelligent rectifier combined with a national rectifier manufacturer.

Finally in 1996, the Nucleus of Advanced Manufacture (NUMA) was founded from
the approval of a project entitled “Integration of the Manufacturing”
by the Program of Nucleus of Excellence (PRONEX) from the Ministry of Science
and Technology (MCT). NUMA was a project that aggregated people from many areas
of knowledge and institutions, around the manufacture, like the real manufacture
enterprises.
What’s NUMA’s excellence? (top)
It has always been questioned what the excellence of NUMA is, what its specific
area of actuation is, where NUMA detaches itself. As a manufacturing enterprise
the answer was: in many areas related with manufacturing and mainly in the integration
between this areas and people. From this conception NUMA has detached itself
in the national scenery. NUMA has received some prizes and has had a wide recognition,
although it has never existed formally.
NUMA and the IFM (top)
The experience of NUMA and a RECOPE project (FINEP’s cooperation networks
in research) in the area of manufacture were the basis to the proposal of Institute
Factory of the Millennium (IFM) which has established a national network of
research in the manufacturing area. NUMA has become the IFM headquarter.
Nowadays we are asked about the difference between NUMA and IFM. The answer
is: NUMA is a virtual organization which aggregates the research groups listed
above and have the competences related below. IFM is a network of research that
aims increase the competitiveness of the national industry.
