| NUMA (Nucleus of Advanced Manufacturing) is an excellence research center recognized and supported by the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology and joins people of different areas of knowledge allowing the development of interdisciplinary works. NUMAs headquarters is at São Carlos School of Engineering at USP. It has also participation of UFSCar, UNICAMP, UNIMEP and University of Aachen (Germany) researchers. Its focus is in the accomplishment of researches integrated in manufacture, using, as tool, the potential of the Information Technology. NUMA seeks to contribute toward that the settled industries in Brazil can compete in a worldwide level, facing the market opening and the economy globalization . At NUMA, companies will find people who can aid them in the decision making process. Know the main topics approached by this site: Mission :NUMAs main mission is the contribution for those settled companies to integrate their business, using the Information Tec. and at the same time widely overlook the manufacturing process, with a holistic vision of the company, in which quality and costs permeate all of its activities.
Objectives :The main objective of the nucleus is the qualification in integration. This qualification involves research and development, personnel formation and training as well as services.
Research and Development Analyzing and testing integrated systems, focused at the national needs and developing components for the existent lacunas. Proposing methodologies implementing those integrated solutions. Performing at FIM the integration scenarios.
Personnel Formation and Training Training and recycling courses to the Community, as well as to students are due to the acquired knowledge. The postgraduated students have the possibility to implement their work into FIM, that is one integrated set for testing purposes.
Services Providing consultant and assessor services in the NUMA areas of knowledge. The Fundação Parque de Alta Tecnologia de São Carlos, which is a high tecnology foundation , with its Incubator of High Technology Companies cell, can absorb the Project staff-members as it has already been done in the areas of CAPP -Computer Aided Process Planning (KSR company), PCP - Planning and Control of Production (Optimal company) and sensors (Sensis company). Thus, the cycle of technological development in the Integration of Manufacture area closes.
Historic :The embryo of NUMA was the CAD/CAM Laboratory, created in 1988. In 1989 wasinstalled the first CIM project of the country, sponsored by RHAE/CNPq program of MCT (Ministry of Science and Technology). Thereupon a FINEP project was approved for the construction of the Integrated Model Factory (FIM), where the idea of NUMA creation had already been raised. In 1991, an agreement between USP and IBM provided the hardware and software supply of the CIM project, as well as net equipment. In 1992, a thematic project was approved at FAPESP aiming the continuity of the FIM construction.

Location :Researchers of USP-São Carlos, UFSCar, UNICAMP, UNIMEP and University of Aachen compose NUMA, and the headquarter is located at São Carlos School of Engineering at USP.Campus.The geographical position of São Carlos city, in the center of the state of São Paulo, allows the decentralization of activities mostly concentrated at the capital, whereas in a ray of 200 Km several emergent groups are located, and they can be supported by NUMA.The city is one of the high technology poles in Brazil, sheltering several already settled industries, of which more than 60 produce high technology items. São Carlos has two public universities (USP and UFSCar), two research units of EMBRAPA, and two private colleges, reckoning approximately 8 thousand university students and 2.500 researchers.NUMA will be able to support the settling manufacturing companies which are in the Interior, in either São Paulo state or Minas Gerais. The illustration below shows the main access to São Carlos.
