Below you will find the knowledge categories that are divided into concepts/philosophies, techniques/methods and systems and tools. Other forms of navigation are being prepared to facilitate the access for visitors. Read more about; objectives of this page, knowledge and the adopted classification of knowledge, information to become a collaborator or a critic of the knowledge categories below.This page is being translated by Carla Estorilio & Karen Young, who are now developing their PhD Program Enterprise Integration at the Cranfield University (soon there will be a link to their personal pages). We thank very much for the efforts they are having in translating our kowledge pages.

To categorise the useful knowledge to keep people who deal with manufacturing companies updated, either as an entrepreneur, employee, student, or employment agency. This categorisation intends to be broad, offering a summarised general vision about the basic concepts for each information category. The information has not been looked at in great detail. It is organised and presented in an abstract format to supply the visitors with a general idea about the subject and a more detailed search is available by consulting the additional information list at the bottom of each section.
What is Knowledge?" Knowledge is a composition of experiences, values, information and specialists ideas that result in a structure to the assessment and incorporation of new experiences and information. It originates and it is applied in peoples mind. In the organisation, knowledge is frequently involved, not only in documents or files, but also, in the routine, processes, practices and organisation norms. Knowledge is derived from information (that in turn derives from data), having the necessity of total human involvement to allow the derivation to occur" (extracted from T.h. Davenport & L. Prusak "Working Knowledge", Harvard Business School Press, 1998).
Types of knowledge:
Explicit: a set of knowledge that can be formalised. It can be related with:
- Registered information to carry out an action. This knowledge can be the result of a theoretical development or from practical experience (for example: description of a work philosophy Just in Time, a method description / script of calculation for a structure, etc); These are the categorised knowledge in this page.
- Descriptive information about necessary resources to carry out an action (for example: manual of an equipment);
- Resultant objects from an application of knowledge that contains intrinsic information on taken decisions (for example: a drawing of a part, a database of a system, etc).
Tacit: a set of knowledge represented by the personal abilities that have been acquired through a formal study or practical experience. This knowledge is difficult to formalise.
Other knowledge related with Product Development
The categorised knowledge is practically related with all types of products. There is specific knowledge for mechanical, electronic, mecatronic, optic products, etc. which will be systemised in a second phase. The basic knowledge related with the above list is being systemised and they will be part of this page in the future.
Concepts / Philosophies: These are the more extensive and widespread knowledge that serve to create a theoretical base and to supply background information to the implementation of the methods, techniques, systems, tools and solutions listed below.
Techniques / Methods: knowledge not so extensive as concepts and philosophies and it is normally structured in steps or related with something specific to reach a determined objective. It is usually related with the listed concepts and philosophies, and can also be classified as them. For example, DFMA can be classified as a concept.
Tools/Systems: knowledge related with commercial products that can be used in product development process. Usually, a tool is associated with a concept and/or a method. Thus, when a type of tool/system is presented the concepts and/or methods related will also be broached.
Information to become a collaborator/critical
If you desire:
to be responsible for some of the knowledge listed below (mainly those that are being systemised);
to be only registered as a specialist about some of that knowledge;
to add some additional information about any knowledge (a bibliography, related site, name of some specialist, supplier companies, etc.);
or simply to comment on what is written, please, make contact with Prof. Henrique Rozenfeld.
Responsible for a knowledge category is the person who writes the text summary about the knowledge category (to see the knowledge pages on the table above) he also analyses and approves the additional information listed in each page.
Specialist is a person who can supply additional information or services related with the respective knowledge.
